The Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade and Family Day Committee would like to call for Parade float entries for this year’s Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade to be held on Sunday 21st March 2010.

The organising committee once again would love to see all 32 counties represented as with the past two years.  Many counties always do well with numbers, but many more still need people to come forward and be part of the Parade and get involved in the floats. If you belong to a county please contact your local representative or the committee’s Parade Manager at  parade@stpatricksday.org.au to get involved.

If you are not sure if your county has a float entered, go to ‘Parade’ section of the Sydney St Patrick’s Day website: www.stpatricksday.org.au where you will find a full list of the County Associations who will be able to help you.

Welcome from the President

A Chairde,

Thank you for visiting our Sydney St Patrick’s Day website.

I am very proud to return as President again for the second year, to ensure the 2010 Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade and Family Day – being held on SUNDAY 21 MARCH 2010 – is bigger and better than the wonderful celebrations we saw at this year’s Parade in March 2009.

To all 100,000 people who attended the Parade and Family Day in Sydney’s CBD, I am sure will agree we were blessed with the weather and the great support from guests to those participating in the floats to the many members of the Irish and Australian business communities who helped us make a great event. Once again the strength of our community in Sydney and NSW was shown by all as the green, white and gold was lining the streets of the Parade.

Our celebration of the Parade this year, being 30 years old in its current form was a credit to all committee’s who have gone before us. Without them we would not have any celebration to go to each year.

Of course the work and commitment of our committee this year made it all come to life and ensured it was a day to remember for all that attended. What everyone sees for one day is the culmination of many months work for the Committee and for their tireless dedication and tremendous effort, we all thank each and every member.

Unfortunately we have lost some members who have sat on the committee for the last few years including: Una O’Neill who took care of the PR and Marketing; through to Alana who has looked after the park and also in her role as Vice President; Maria De Souza in the citizenship marquee; and Helen Burnside in accounts. A heartfelt thank you once again for your help and commitment while in those roles on behalf of myself and the wider Irish community.

We would welcome those of you who out there who have always wanted to be part of the team to make the day happen, by all means give me a call as we are always looking for skilled volunteers.

This year it is the 200th anniversary of the Parade being recognised as an official day of celebration for the Irish by the government of NSW.

It was back in 1810 when Governor Macquarie recognised the celebration by providing entertainment on the day for convicts who were employed by the government at the time. Little did he know he was making history.

It has truly been a huge year for me personally so much has happened: my wife and I had our first child called Seamus Kian and he is now powering about wanting to take on the world! It was not a light decision to come back and take up another year as President as this time is so precious but I am happy to be dedicating time and my experience from this year to the role.

I understand that the work that has been done to date in creating the Parade will anchor it as a day of celebration for many years to come, not just for the Irish community but the Australian community as a whole who come out to celebrate the day with us in March.

As I said many times, it is not just the Irish celebrating being Irish, but Sydney celebrating its Irish history and heritage.

I hope that you will enjoy the 2010 Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade and Family Day, and I thank each and every one of you for supporting this event and keeping the tradition of celebrating the day of our Patron Saint alive here in Sydney.

La Feíle Pádraig duit,

Gerard
